One of the most common questions before a notary appointment is simple: should I sign the document before the notary arrives?
In many cases, the safest answer is no. If a signature needs to be notarized or witnessed, it usually needs to be signed in front of the notary.
Why waiting matters
The notary may need to confirm your identity, watch you sign, complete the notarial certificate, and record the appointment correctly. If the document is already signed too early, the appointment may need extra review or may not be able to move forward the way you expected.
What you can do before the appointment
- Have your current photo ID ready.
- Keep the full document package together.
- Review the document for blank spaces or missing pages.
- Confirm the appointment location.
- Ask the requesting party if you are unsure whether anything should be completed before signing.
For loan signings
For loan signing appointments, keep the full package available and wait for the signing appointment unless your lender, title company, or signing coordinator gives you different instructions.
